Olive branch, symbol of peace and victory.
In Greek mythology, there once was a person that was half man, half snaked named Cecrops. He was the first king of Athens. At the time no god had claimed Athens, but there were two gods that wanted the city and they were Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, the god of the ocean.
The people of Athens didn’t want to choose between the gods, knowing they would anger the other. So, Athena had the idea that she and Poseidon would each give them a gift and the people would decide which gift was better. Who’s ever gift they picked would claim Athens.
Poseidon gave them the first gift. He hit the earth with his massive trident and a nice stream began to flow. The people of Athens were quite happy about this until they realized that it was salt water and thus not drinkable.
Athena then hit the earth and an olive tree began to grow. This could bring the people of Athens food, wood, oil, etc. Needless to say, they chose Athena’s gift because it was actually useful.
Athena became the protector of the city (polis), many people throughout the Greek world worshiped her as Athena Polias (Ἀθηνᾶ Πολιάς "Athena of the city").
