The Ancient Greeks made pottery for everyday use. Most surviving pottery consists of drinking vessels such as amphoras, kraters (bowls for mixing wine and water), hydrias (water jars), libation bowls, jugs and cups. Painted funeral urns have also been found. Miniatures were also produced in large numbers, mainly for use as offerings at temples.
A lot of the shapes are considered particularly beautiful, but it is the decoration of these clay vases that is most admired. Many scenes on the vases depict events from Greek myth. We can learn a lot about how the Greeks saw their gods and heroes from these vases. Other Greek vases provide us with information on the educational system, the theatre, religion and celebrations, every day life in general. At last, many vases have more decorative style with motives from sea life, floral designs or animal and creatures from Greek mythology.
